Information and a Reminder

Dear Choir Members:

Perhaps most or all of you have already received this information, but
you would want to know that Merle Strohbehn passed away earlier today.
His memorial service is planned for Sunday afternoon, January 6th, at
3:00 p.m. Harriett and the family would very much like to have the
choir sing an anthem at that service, and I know all of you would want
to be involved if you are in town and available that day. So please
mark the date and time on your calendars.

Also a reminder of the plan for this Sunday, December 30th: we will
meet at our usual time of 8:45, to practice an introit and an anthem for
the worship service. Both of these pieces are familiar music and we
will be able to have them in good shape with just the rehearsal that
morning. Please try, if possible, to be there a bit early, so we can
have a full rehearsal-time.

Let's begin Wednesday-night rehearsals again on January 2nd.

Thanks again for all the rewarding and meaningful music-making of the
Christmas season.

Best wishes,

Allan

Thanks, Reminders, et al.

Dear Choir Members:

After the service yesterday, a lady whom I did not know came up to me and said "That is a good choir" (emphasis hers).  I agree with her, even though I have no idea where we stand in that great lexicon of choirs -- good and bad, amateur and professional.  But I do know that I was very much moved by the entire service yesterday, by the quality of your singing, and by the beautiful message the music conveyed.  Thank you for all the hard work that made this possible.

Sincerely,

            Allan

P.S.  I apologize for the confusion about the caroling plan; I had it on my list of last-minute information, but forgot to tell you.  I had talked to Harriett Thursday morning, then she called me on Saturday to say that she thought it would probably not be workable for the choir to come sing for Merle, since he seemed to be slipping fast.  She greatly appreciated our offer and would look forward to hearing us another time.

P.P.S.  And to keep before us the old adage "No rest for the weary," a reminder that for those who are available this evening for the Christmas Eve service, we will meet at 10:15 p.m.

P.P.P.S.  BUT NO REHEARSAL THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING!!

P.P.P.P.S.  But if you are available to sing at next Sunday's service, we will meet that morning at the usual 8:45 a.m. time.  We'll just practice and sing a familiar anthem that morning.

Rehearsal-Time Reminder

Dear Choir Members:

Just a reminder that we will meet for rehearsal tomorrow morning at
8:30. Thanks for the great rehearsal on Wednesday evening. I'm really
looking forward to the service and the music on Sunday. See you then.

Thanks.

Wednesday Choir Rehearsal Time

Dear Choir Members:

It turns out that all the instrumentalists can come to the earlier
rehearsal for tomorrow night -- so let's begin choir rehearsal at 7:00!
Thus, we will still be finished by 9:00. I think it will really be
rewarding for us to hear everything/everyone together.

By the way, this morning on the MPR classical-music station they played
two of the cantata movements: No. 6 - "Sweet Was the Song" (the one
with Aria as soloist, which ends with "Silent Night"), and No. 7 -
"Rejoice and Be Merry," and the announcer indicated he was going to play
more later.

See you tomorrow night at 7:00.

Thanks.

Allan

P.S. As a way of checking to make sure everyone gets this message,
would you please send me a reply --"Message received," or whatever.

Choir reminder

Dear Choir Members:

Just a note to remind you of the invitation from K4C for any choir
members who would be interested in joining them for Christmas caroling
today. The children will have supper at 5:30 at the church, to which we
all are invited, then depart for Oak Ridge Place care center down the
hill from the church at 6:00 for caroling. The plan is to return to the
church by 7:00. So if you are available they would be happy to have you
join them.

Then, our usual rehearsal time -- 7:30 - 9:15 tonight -- when we will
plan to go through the cantata again, and sing through the Christmas Eve
music as well. Incidentally, a couple of the instruments will be
joining us this evening, so we should have a good complement of choir,
soloists, and instruments. I'm looking forward to it. See you then.

Thanks.

This Sunday

Dear Choir Members:

Thanks so much for the really good rehearsal we had Wednesday evening.
That Christmas cantata is a tough -- but lovely -- piece of music, and I
think we are making good progress on it. It will be exciting to add the
instruments in a couple of weeks.

I forgot to mention that we need to use a seating change in the choir
loft for this Sunday -- but since everybody is going to be there a bit
early Sunday anyway (!), we should have no trouble adjusting. Laura is
using the piano for the prelude and offertory, and will be joined by two
instrumentalists -- oboe and cello -- so we need the back two rows on
the basses' side for the instruments. Therefore let's use a formation in
which the basses are divided, half on each side, which means that the
sopranos, altos, and tenors will be sitting in a slightly different
configuration than usual. You all will still be singing next to people
in your own section, but possibly in a different row than usual.

To speed up matters, I will put a name tag on each chair: look for your
name when you arrive, and it should work out great.

Thanks

Choir Christmas Music

Dear Choir Members:

Just wanted to remind all that for the next three Wednesday-night
rehearsals, we will practice an extra 15 minutes, stopping at 9:15. As
mentioned at our last rehearsal before Thanksgiving, we need to have
time to get through all the movements of the Christmas cantata, as well
as go over the music for the next couple of Sundays and for the 11:00
Christmas Eve service. So I hope everyone can make it to rehearsal this
evening -- and stay in good health! I think all the nice music we will
be singing will be worth the extra effort. Thanks, as always, for all
your good work.

Dear Choir Members:

It appears that over half the choir members are able to rehearse this Wednesday evening, so I think it will be very useful to get together:  we will be singing an anthem on Sunday, and we need to continue becoming more comfortable with the Christmas cantata.

Since there are no other Wednesday-night activities at the church this week, let's meet at 7:00 (rather than 7:30) and finish early.

Sunday morning we will meet at the usual time of 8:45 a.m.

I give special thanks at this time of the year, and really throughout the year, for your dedication, your time, and your talent as we -- in worshiping together-- help to lead worship at First Presbyterian.  Thank you all.

Sincerely,

Choir Schedule for Sunday

Dear Choir Members:

Just a reminder of the schedule for this Sunday, October 21:

9:30 -- Incarnational Service. Choir does not sing.

3:15 -- Meet for rehearsal in the sanctuary. (Note: The bell
choir may still be rehearsing in the sanctuary when you arrive, but
please come on in to the choir loft and sit quietly --
not talking, that is -- until they finish.)

4:00 -- Installation service for Rev. Cader Howard

To expedite matters a bit, the choir-folders cart will be upstairs at
its usual Wednesday-night place, right outside the sanctuary doors.
Thus, if it will suit your schedule better and you can't arrive much
before 3:15, just pick up your folder and come on into the choir loft --
and wait until after we rehearse to put your robe on.

See you Sunday afternoon. Thanks for all your time and effort.

Choir Rehearsals Begin!

Dear Choir Members:

We'll begin our new season of choir tomorrow night, September 5th, at
the usual time -- 7:30 p.m.

I have a lot of nice music planned for this year, including several
pieces with different and unusual instrumentalists, and new and special
music for Christmas. I hope you will be able to sing with us.

I look forward to seeing you.

Last Sunday and Next Sunday

Dear Choir:

Thanks to all of you who were able to sing in the "Battle Hymn" last
Sunday. I thought it really sounded great -- and the piccolo was a
great addition! A neat arrangement.

As you know, the plan is to sing again this coming Sunday, the 15th,
when our new pastor, Cader Howard, will be preaching. Enough people
have indicated their availability for that day, so we should be able to
sing both an introit and an anthem. Again, please plan to meet at 8:30
so we have plenty of time to rehearse those pieces as well as a couple
of the hymns.

If anyone's plans have changed and you are now available for Sunday,
please come; we can always use as many as possible.

Thanks again for all you do to make our worship services meaningful and
beautiful.

Sincerely,

Allan

Battle Hymn of the Republic

This note is to confirm that we will be singing the "Battle Hymn of the
Republic" this coming Sunday, July 8th. (I'm sending this note to all
the choir members, although I know some people are unavailable this
Sunday -- if plans have changed for any of the latter group, please join
us if you can.)

The schedule is to meet at 8:30 in the choir loft (no robes, but wear
something red white and blue if you wish) to rehearse, then we will sing
the anthem at the close of Sunday's service. Incidentally, we have a
piccolo player who will be joining us on the grand finale part of the piece.

Thanks.

Allan

P.S. As I mentioned in an earlier e-mail, we hope there will be enough
choir members available that we would be able to sing at the service the
next Sunday, July 15th, when our new pastor will be preaching, followed
by the congregational meeting. I can check on Sunday with the people
who are singing this weekend about their availability for the 15th, but
if there are others who would be available that day, please let me
know. It's easier to pick an appropriate anthem when I know how many
choir members will be able to sing. Thanks very much.

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Dear Choir Members:

Although I ran out of time to do this the last time we were together on Memorial Day Sunday, I did want to check with people about the possibility of singing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" on Sunday, July 8th.  If enough people are available the plan would be to practice the piece that morning at 8:30, then sing it at the 9:30 service.  So I am wondering how many of you could come that day:  would everyone please respond to this e-mail indicating "Yes" or "No" concerning your availability for the 8th.  Then I can get back in touch to let you know whether or not we will sing.  Also, I hope we could pick up a few non-choir members to bolster our ranks that morning (I have already recruited a couple).  Please invite any other singers to join us for this famous arrangement of a famous piece.  And please let me hear from you as soon as possible.

Thanks again for all your time, talent, dedication, and good will throughout the year.  It is much appreciated by me and by the congregation.

            Allan

P.S.  We might want to get together one more Sunday this summer -- when the new pastor comes to preach his introductory sermon before the official congregational meeting that day.  I will let you know more about this when the date is confirmed.

Choir this coming Sunday

Dear Choir Members:

This is just a reminder that the choir will be singing at this coming
Sunday's service -- May 27th, Pentecost Sunday. When I passed around
the availability questionnaire the last Sunday we were together, there
were a dozen people who indicated they would be available. So I hope
those people can still come, and if anyone else's plans have changed, I
hope they will join us also.

The plan is to meet at 8:30 Sunday morning. We will practice an anthem
with Kristen Diederichs playing oboe, and there are a couple of other
short pieces of music for the service which we will need to sing
through, also.

I look forward to seeing those who can make it Sunday morning, and
thanks to everybody for a great choir year.

Sincerely,

Allan

No Choir Tomorrow

Hi Everybody:

Just a reminder that the choir is not singing at the service tomorrow,
April 29th. (Of course, you could show up as early as usual, if you
just want to keep in practice.)

Next Wednesday night the clarinetist, Calyssa Hall, will be with us.
Then on Sunday, May 6th, we will sing both the Rutter and the Mozart
pieces. So it should be a rewarding and meaningful conclusion of the
choir season.

While I'm at it, I will mention that on Sunday, the 6th, we will meet at
8:30 a.m., just to make sure we have time to go over the two
compositions with the clarinet, as well as any other music for the service.

Thanks for your energy and devotion. See you Wednesday night.

Allan

Upcoming Schedule

Dear Choir Members:

Please note that we have only two rehearsals left to prepare the music -- "The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation" by John Rutter; and the movement from the Mozart mass -- for Music Appreciation Sunday on May 6th.  And as one choir member remarked after last week's rehearsal, "those two pieces are not exactly easy!"

Our soloist, Calyssa Hall, will be with us on May 3rd, and we want to have the music in good shape for the time together with her.

So I just wanted to urge everyone to be at these next two Wednesday-night rehearsals, if at all possible.

Hope you can make it -- and thanks for all the hard work you have already put in.

    Sincerely,

            Allan

Easter Sunday reminder

Just a reminder that we have changed the rehearsal time for Easter
Sunday morning to 7:45 a.m. I don't know what you'll do with all the
extra time to sleep in or whatever, but do use it wisely.

Thanks so much for the beautiful music at the Good Friday service.

See you tomorrow morning at 7:45.

Choir Rehearsal Tonight

Just wanted to confirm that we will have choir rehearsal this evening; I
think we have plenty to rehearse.

On a somewhat related matter, tonight at 7:00 is the first of the
Wednesday-evening Lenten meditation services. Anne McManus is providing
the music tonight, and it would be a nice courtesy to have a good
representation of the choir present. So if you are free at 7:00, come
early for our rehearsal and attend the short service starting at 7:00.

Thanks.
