Christmas Eve and Next Sunday

Dear Choir:

I thought things really came together last Sunday: both "The Apple
Tree" and the Vaughan Williams. Several people have commented to me --
or via email -- how lovely they thought the pieces were sung, and one
person especially spoke of how meaningful the message of each had been.
I hope you have received similar comments. Some choir members mentioned
that we got apart on one place in the "Fantasia," but I guess I must
have missed that, or at least realized that we got back together again,
which would be the goal, after all.

So thanks for all the hard work.

Just a reminder for this evening -- Christmas Eve. We will rehearse at
9:00: the music cart will be upstairs outside the sanctuary door so
just come directly into the choir loft. There will be time after the
rehearsal to go downstairs and put on robes before the start of the service.

Also, let's take next Sunday, the 28th, off! Laura's daughter, Marta,
will provide a solo in place of the anthem, and Laura and Rebecca
Erickson are playing some organ/piano duets, so there will still be
special music. So, no choir this coming Sunday.

Thanks again for all your time, talent, and devotion throughout the
year, and especially at this busy but special time of the year.

Sincerely,

Allan

This weekend

Dear Choir:

Probably a good idea to go over the schedule for this Sunday:

    1) Please be in choir loft for rehearsal by 8:30 a.m.

    2) Rehearsal will be from 8:30 until 9:14

    3) The carol sing will start at 9:15.  This means that you will need to get your robe before 8:30, if possible, since the carol sing will start immediately after our rehearsal, and will take up the time before the worship service begins with Laura and Solvay playing the prelude as soon as the carol sing ends.

    4) The music cart will be upstairs outside the sanctuary door.  Please come directly into the rehearsal if it is necessary for you to arrive late, and don't take time to get your robe.

And a reminder for Christmas Eve:

We'll begin rehearsal at 9:00 p.m. (the service starts at 10:00.)

Thanks for all your devotion, talent, and hard work in learning and singing all this music for the Christmas season.  It will go great on Sunday and on Christmas Eve.

Sincerely,

                    Allan

Reminder

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that the choir is not singing this Sunday,  since the bell choir is providing the special music.

However, remember about the carol sing at 9:15; it would be great to have your voices leading the way.

Thanks for the good -- if tiring! -- rehearsal last Wednesday.  I believe we made good progress in bringing the Vaughan Williams Fantasia  together, and will make even more progress next Wednesday night.  It's a beautiful piece and will be even moreso with the addition of the cello part.  Thanks for your devotion to the cause.

Sincerely,
                   Allan

Reminder for tonight

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that we will plan to rehearse until 9:15 tonight, just to make sure we have time to get over everything for the coming Advent and Christmas worship services.  Hope everyone can make it as we prepare especially for the Fantasia on Christmas Carols on the 21st.

Thanks much.

Reminders

Dear Choir:

1) A reminder to anyone who will be singing at the Thanksgiving Eve
service tomorrow night: please be at the Calvary Assembly church ready
to rehearse by 6:00 p.m. We have two numbers to practice and the time
will be short since the service starts at 7:00 (nice anthems with Sue
Boeve playing flute on both). No robes. I will bring music and
folders. Everyone is welcome to come and sing.

2) There is no rehearsal at our church tomorrow night (logical).

3) We will be singing this coming Sunday, November 30th. So again, I
urge everyone to be in the choir loft to rehearse by 8:45 a.m. Sunday
morning.

4) And a final reminder that the upcoming Wednesday night rehearsals in
December are especially important as we prepare our special Christmas
music. Hope everyone can be there.

Thanks for all you do as we worship together.

Fwd: Fwd: Girls playing around

DearChoir:

Well, this is the latest from my brother-in-law, but it wouldn't work to share at a rehearsal, so I'm forwarding it.
Don't try this at home.

While I have you on the line, here are a couple of reminders:

    1)  The choir is not singing this Sunday.  I hope you can all be there to hear the Partners in Praise Girls' Choir.

    2)  Those who are available to sing at the Thanksgiving Eve service meet at 6:00 at Calvary Assembly Church Wednesday night.  No robes.  I will bring along some of the old black folders for holding music, but if you want to use a new one with the hand-hold strap, please stop at the church and pick yours up.  (I will also have copies of the music.)

Thanks.

Choir reminders

Dear Choir:

It's time to put the hammer to the metal.  I have no idea what that means, but just in case it means "Wednesday night rehearsals for the next several weeks before Christmas are really important as we get ready for the Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Christmas Carols -- as well as music for Christmas Eve, the first Sunday in Advent, the Thanksgiving Eve service, and related service music," that's what I wanted to say.

Whatever.  Looking forward to seeing you this evening.

I hope last Sunday's anthem was as meaningful and strikingly beautiful for you as it was for me and for members of the congregation.  Thanks for all your hard work on that one, and always.

Sincerely,
    Allan

P.S.  A reminder that we will be rehearsing until 9:15 tonight and on the upcoming Wednesday nights until Christmas.  Thanks again.

Reminders for Sunday

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that daylight-savings time ends this Sunday, so
following the "spring ahead, fall back" guideline, you can turn your
clocks back one hour and still get to choir on time!

It's been working out well for us to come directly to the choir loft so
we can start the rehearsal promptly at 8:45 and end at 9:15, with enough
time to put on robes then.

Thanks for the good/hard work at Wednesday night's choir practice; we
rehearsed a lot of music and made great progress.

See you Sunday at 8:45.

Thanks.\\

Re: Reminder about Sunday

Greetings fellow singers:

I am sending this message to everyone as I forgot to pass a sign-up sheet last night.  Mary Gillespie spoke at a previous rehearsal about attending the concert to be given by Laura Edman and the Roseville String Ensemble led by Jim Hainlen on Sunday, November 2, at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 Roselawn Ave. W. in Roseville.  They will be performing the Francis Poulenc Concerto for Organ, strings and timpani.  Discussion of the music by Laura and Jim will begin at 3:00 PM and the performance begins at 3:30.  There is no ticket charge but a donation is suggested. We are planning to go to Keyes Restaurant near the church for supper following the performance .Mary has made contact with our new church members and some are planning to attend with us. Please send me an email if you are planning to attend as we will need to make a reservation at Keyes.  I will have a sign-up sheet on Sunday and again next Wednesday to facilitate carpooling.  We are hoping to have a good showing of First Presbyterian friends to support Laura and Jim.  Thanks, Jane Boss  janeboss78@gmail.com

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that, in order to go through all the various pieces for
the worship service, we will meet for rehearsal tomorrow morning at
8:30. As is now our usual procedure, please wait to don your robes
until after rehearsal ends at 9:15. The music cart will be upstairs.

Looking forward to seeing you then. Thanks.

Tonight's rehearsal

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder for anyone who can come early to tonight's rehearsal,
that we will be singing "Dream On" (the anthem for this coming Sunday)
with the children as part of their K4C closing worship service this
evening. If you can come early, Cheryl would like for us to please sit
in the choir loft and when it comes time for the anthem, the children's
choir will come and join us there.

The service begins at 7:15. If you are able to come early, see you then
-- and if it won't work for you to come early, just come at the usual
time of 7:30.

Thanks for all your good work.

Tonight's rehearsal

Dear Choir:

With our expanded membership, let's try some new seating arrangements,
perhaps exploring several different options. So, beginning at tonight's
choir rehearsal, let's have the tenors and the sopranos switch places;
that is, the tenors will sit in the two back rows on the right-hand side
of the choir loft behind the altos, and the sopranos will come down to
the front two rows on the left-hand side of the choir loft, in front of
the basses.

We can give this a try as well as some other plans now and then, and
even still use on occasion our current seating arrangement.

But whatever -- that's us: ever onward and upward (and sideways).

Thanks for your time and talent -- and ability to adapt.

Sincerely,
Allan

Regarding Choir Wednesday night

Dear Choir:

Beginning tomorrow night, the K4C schedule will again include their 7:10
closing worship service. In the past many of you have wanted to come to
that worship service prior to our rehearsal; others may prefer to come
just for choir rehearsal. Whatever your choice, I just wanted to remind
everyone that choir rehearsal will begin at 7:30 immediately after the
worship service.

See you then. And thanks for the good music/singing last Sunday; many
fine comments were received.

Tomorrow

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder about our new regimen for Sunday mornings:

Please be in the choir loft by 8:45 a.m. to begin rehearsal. The music
cart will be outside the sanctuary door. Don't take time to put on
robes but come directly into the sanctuary, so that we can end the
rehearsal at 9:15. Then, don your robes.

It worked great last Sunday -- see you tomorrow.

Thanks.

Sad news

Dear Choir:

As some have already heard, Laura Edman's brother-in-law, David
Mitchell, passed away last week in Anchorage, Alaska. He had been ill
with kidney disease for some time. Laura and Tim had spent about a week
with them during their annual fishing-get-together in Alaska just a few
weeks ago, and realized that his strength was declining. I know we all
will want to keep Laura and her sister, Gwen, and all the family, in our
prayers.

Allan.

Reminder

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that the choir is not singing this Sunday, since the
bells are scheduled to provide the special music during the service.

Also, it was a treat to have Sheena and Douglas Tomney and John Sinclair
join us as first-time new members to the choir last Wednesday night.
Welcome to them, and welcome back to all you returning faithful
members. It promises to be an exciting and rewarding choir year.

Sincerely,

Allan

Reminder for Sunday

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder about the new procedure for Sunday morning's rehearsal.
Please pick up your music at the sanctuary door and come directly into
the choir loft without going dowstairs to put your robe on. We really
must begin rehearsing at 8:45 if we are to get through everything by
9:15. Then there will be time to put on robes -- and to admire the new
storage cabinets!

See you Sunday morning -- promptly at 8:45. (Better make that 8:43. I
know that no one would want to be late and miss out on singing all this
nice music!)

Thanks, as always, for your time and talent. It is much appreciated by
me and by the congregation.

Choir!

Dear Choir:

Wednesday is the day -- Wednesday evening, to be precise:  rehearsals will begin again for the coming choir year -- 7:30 p.m.

I will enjoy being back together again with everybody.  I think there are some really nice pieces on the schedule, as well as a couple of special events, including the return of pianist Grant West in September, and a guest choir later in the fall.

You will also be happy to read the following, which I have received from highest authority (Mary Neary, to be precise):

Singing daily for at least ten minutes reduces stress, clears sinuses, improves posture, and can even help you live longer.

But you already knew that, of course!  Looking forward to seeing you Wednesday evening.

            Sincerely,

                            Allan

Thanks to the men for last Sunday

Dear Choir:

Special thanks to all the men who were able to sing in the
intergenerational choir -- "men and boy" -- last Sunday. I believe we
comported ourselves well, including the great recovery from the missed
entrance! Thanks also to all those non-members who joined us.

Hope the rest of the summer goes well for everyone. See you in the fall
(the first rehearsal would be Wednesday night, September 3rd -- still
plenty of time to enjoy the vacation).

Sincerely,

Allan

Choir Men: This Sunday Is For You!

Dear Choir, especially the men:

Just a reminder that this Sunday, the 13th, is the annual
intergenerational choir for men and boys. I hope you can come.

The plan is to meet at 8:30 a.m. to practice the anthem -- "When the
Saints Go Marching in" -- then sing for the service at 9:30.

We had a good turnout when the women and girls sang a few weeks ago, and
I'm hoping for the same this Sunday.

Thanks.

Allan

P.S. Special thanks to Julie James for helping to get the music ready.

Last Sunday

Dear Choir:

Thanks so much to all of you who were available to sing in the
women-and-girls intergenerational choir last Sunday. With the guests
who joined us, there were a total of 22 singers, and I think we sounded
great on both those pieces.

And a reminder to the men: July 13th is the date for the men-and-boys
choir. I hope you'll be able to come and sing -- rehearsal at 8:30 that
morning -- just a little over two weeks away.

So, thanks to everybody.... for leading the way.

Sincerely,

Allan

Friday, June 20, 2014

This Sunday: Women's Choir!

Dear Choir:

This Sunday -- June 22nd -- is the first of the two summer
intergenerational-choir dates: this Sunday for women and girls.

As always I very much depend upon regular choir members to lead the way;
thus I hope you all will be able to be there Sunday morning to .....
lead the way!

The plan is to start the rehearsal at 8:30 a.m. We will be rehearsing
two pieces -- both easily learned, and fun to sing: one for the introit
and one for the anthem.

Please invite other women and girls to come sing with us; everyone will
be welcome.

Thanks for your help.

Allan

P.S. The men are scheduled for Sunday, July 13th.

Choir Dates for this summer

Dear Choir:

As happens every summer, after arranging the summer special-music
schedule, it is necessary to make changes because of unanticipated
conflicts.

Thus, I need to change the dates when I am hoping that you will be
available to sing, as follows:

Women and Girls Intergenerational Choir -- Sunday, June 22nd

Men and Boys Intergenerational Choir -- Sunday, July 13th
(this is still a tentative date; it may need to be changed)

As we did last year, the plan would be to meet at 8:30 on your
respective Sunday to rehearse an anthem -- and, hopefully, to be joined
by a host of non-regular choir members.

Please mark/change these dates on your calendars. Thanks again for all
your work.

Sincerely,
Allan

Summer Schedule

Dear Choir:

On our last Sunday together, May 11th -- Choir Appreciation Sunday, singing the Fauré Requiem -- I mentioned that we might also sing on Memorial Day Sunday, which would be this coming Sunday, May 25th.

It now appears that this will not work out, so we will not be singing this Sunday.

There are two other summer dates, however, for which I hope your schedules will allow you to come and sing:

June 29th -- Women and Girls Choir -- both regular choir members and anyone else who would like to sing

August 10th -- Men and Boys Choir -- both regular choir members and anyone else who would like to sing

We would meet at 8:30 on these mornings for rehearsal.  Please mark the dates on your calendars.

And, speaking of the Fauré, what a wonderfully uplifting way to mark the end of our choir year.  It was especially meaningful, I thought, to be able to sing the Requiem twice, not only because of all the rehearsing we did, but perhaps moreso because of the beautiful spiritual and musical message it carries.  Thanks to everybody for making the past months a rewarding year of music and worship.

Sincerely,
                    Allan

Friday, May 9, 2014

Thanks, and a reminder

Dear Choir:

Wednesday night's rehearsal was certainly productive and uplifting --
and I am very much looking forward to Sunday's worship service and to
hearing the Requiem again.

Just a reminder that we will meet in the choir loft at 8:15 Sunday
morning. We have several things to rehearse besides the Fauré, so it
will be great if everybody is ready to go at 8:15.

As always, thanks for sharing your talents with all of us.

Sincerely,
Allan

Saturday, April 26, 2014

Tomorrow

Dear Choir:

Since tomorrow is "Earth Day" at the church, and members of the
congregation have been invited to come dressed informally if they so
desire, let's not wear robes on this occasion. You can, of course,
dress as informally or formally as you wish, but all you will need is
your music folder, so the music cart will be upstairs.

The weather forecast doesn't sound too promising for the outdoor part of
the day, but we might as well approach it positively. See you at 8:45.

Thanks.

Allan

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Many thanks

Dear Choir:

What a week was last week -- and even after the beautiful singing of the
Fauré on Friday night, everybody tossed off Sunday morning's music with
the usual aplomb. Thanks so much for offering your time and your voices
to make these services truly meaningful and rewarding.

I just realized that we have only three Sundays left in our regular
choir schedule before it's time for a summer break. Since May 11th is
designated as Choirs Appreciation Sunday, we need to get that music a
bit better in hand, of course -- not to mention that we haven't yet
practiced an anthem for this coming Sunday.

But we certainly could do with a shortened rehearsal for at least one
Wednesday night, so just plan for an hour's rehearsal tomorrow night --
7:30 - 8:30.

See you then -- and thanks again.*

Sincerely,

Allan

Tomorrow -- Easter Sunday

Dear Choir:

What a meaningful and worshipful tenebrae service last night! Thanks so
much for the beautiful music which was so uplifting throughout the
service. Several of the instrumentalists spoke to me afterwards about
the great job which the choir did. It has truly been a rewarding week
already for me -- so much of which has been thanks to your efforts at
rehearsals and at the services -- and I know tomorrow will be equally so.

Sincerely,

Allan

And, just in case anyone has forgotten -- or has been trying to forget:

Easter Sunday, April 20th -- Choir meets at 7:30 a.m. to warm up and
rehearse with instruments
Two
services 8:30 and 11:00, with breakfast served in between
Sing
"Hallelujah Chorus" at end of both services

Thursday, April 17, 2014

Schedule for Good Friday service

Dear Choir:

Thanks so much for the uplifting and rewarding rehearsal last night.  I'm looking forward to hearing again all the music for this weekend's services.

Here's a reminder about the Good Friday (tomorrow night) schedule:

6:15 p.m. -- Meet in the dining room at 6:15 to warm up and to review order of service, last-minute reminders, etc.

6:30 p.m. -- Sing through the Requiem with the instruments

    7:30 p.m. -- Tenebrae service

It will be a beautiful and meaningful service.  Musically, besides the Fauré and Laura's music from the organ, there will be three instrumental solos during the service:
Jann (harp); Joan (violin); and Solvay (cello).

I hope there will be a large congregation.  Please urge friends and neighbors to come and take part.

Thanks again for giving so much time and talent to the worship services year 'round.

Sincerely,
                    Allan

Reminder about Wednesday's rehearsal

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that the plan for tomorrow's (Wednesday) rehearsal is to
meet in the dining room at 7:15 to warm up, then move into the sanctuary
to rehearse with the instruments at 7:30. After rehearsing the Fauré,
we would need to rehearse the music for Sunday morning, which will
probably go overtime until 9:15 p.m..

I hope this will work out for you as we sing this beautiful music.

Thanks for all your skill and devotion.

Reminder for Palm Sunday

Dear Choir:

Just to be sure there's no confusion, we will meet tomorrow (Palm
Sunday) at our usual time of 8:45.

See you then.

Allan

P.S. Early next week I'll send out reminders about the rehearsal and
service times for Holy Week and Easter. But as a preview, here they are:

Wednesday, April 16th Rehearsal -- Choir meets at 7:15
p.m. in the dining room to warm up, before joining instruments at 7:30
Rehearse until 9:15 p.m.

the dining room to warm up
Run-through of Requiem with instruments, starting at 6:30
Tenebrae
service starts at 7:30 p.m. (there was some confusion in the newsletter,
which listed two different times; but 7:30 is the correct one)

Easter Sunday, April 20th -- Choir meets at 7:30 a.m. to
warm up and rehearse with instruments
Two
services 8:30 and 11:00, with breakfast served in between
Sing
"Hallelujah Chorus" at end of both services

Choir rehearsal information

Dear Choir:

I think we will need to rehearse until 9:15 tonight, and again next
Wednesday night, in order to get over everything we must practice for
Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter. I hope this will work out all
right for you.

Many thanks for your time and talent, and especially for the extra time
you give during the major church occasions, such as Easter and
Christmas. It is much appreciated by me and by the entire congregation.

Hi Allan,

I don’t know if you listen to MPR in the mornings or not. This morning featured a story on Walker West music school:

Daylight Savings Time!

Dear Choir:

Don't forget that daylight savings time starts tomorrow morning. That
means 8:45 a.m. is an hour earlier than it was today.

Aaarghhhhh!

Anyway, see you tomorrow bright and early.

Thanks for all you do.

Wednesday

Dear Choir:

A reminder that tomorrow night is the Ash Wednesday service. As you
will recall, there is a soup supper at 6:00 to which everyone is
invited. Whether or not you are able to come to that, please meet in
the sanctuary, with robes, at 6:40 to rehearse for the service which
begins at 7:00.

Following the service we will have our usual Wednesday-night rehearsal.

Thanks for your devotion and good singing.

Concert Tonight

Dear Choir:

Several of us were at the Music St. Croix performance last night at the
Historic Court House. It was a great concert! -- all the pieces were
very listener-friendly and the performers were outstanding. If you're
looking for a way to keep warm tonight, go to the concert: 7:00 p.m.
I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Music Saint Croix concerts

Dear Choir:

Here is the information about the Music Saint Croix concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings at the Historic Washington County Courthouse.

The  concert begins each evening at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $16 general admission, and $10 for seniors and students.

Entitled "A Concert of Unusual Trios," the performances will feature compositions for surprisingly-varied combinations of three instruments (well, be alert, since the program also includes "a trio that is not a trio," by none other than George Frideric Handel himself).  It will be a delightful concert, for sure.

Reminder

Dear Choir:

A couple of reminders:

1) We'll meet at our usual time -- 8:45 a.m. -- Sunday morning

2) Also, a reminder to not wear strong perfume or after-shave
scents in the choir, because other people might be allergic to that
substance, or just find the strong fragrance a little overpowering at
such close quarters. So please observe the sometimes unwritten -- but
generally understood -- rule of all choirs to avoid using perfumes or
after-shave lotions when singing in a choir.

Thanks to all for your devotion and good work.
