Sunday morning

Dear Choir:

Besides being New Year's Day, tomorrow morning is, of course, also Sunday.  Knowing what big party-people most of us are, this note is to urge you to celebrate wisely (go to bed by 9:00), or if you are up really late celebrating New Year's Eve, wait to go to bed and just tool on over to the church for rehearsal at 8:45 A.M.

Actually, we do have several things to rehearse, and we do need to finish sooner than usual, because Laura is going to play a short recital of some great organ pieces beginning at 9:15.

So, to have time to practice all the music we need to, and to be done in time so we can listen to Laura's music, please do your best to be in the choir loft by 8:45.  On this occasion it would probably be wise to get to the church in time to put on your choir robe before(!) rehearsal so as not to miss any of Laura's short recital.

Ergo, see you at 8:40.

Thanks for all the wonderful music-making together over the holiday season.

    Sincerely,
                            Allan

No Rehearsal tonight

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder there will be no rehearsal tonight. And we'll meet at
the usual time -- 8:45 -- on Sunday morning.

Hope you have a pleasant New Year's Eve.

Schedule for Christmas Eve & Christmas Day

Dear Choir:

Here's the schedule for the 10:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service tonight:
» Rehearsal starting at 9:15 p.m.  We will wear robes, but there will be time after the end of the rehearsal before the service                                                                                                 starts to put on robes -- so please come directly to the choir loft.

Schedule for the service on Christmas Day:
» Rehearsal at the usual time of 8:45 a.m.  We won't wear robes, since the service is informal.

Thanks for all the musical gifts of time and talent you bring to our worship services.

       --  Allan

Here's the first part of a poem by one of the Brontë sisters, Anne:  "Music on Christmas Morn."  (Perhaps it will inspire us all as we rise early Sunday morning!)

Music I love -- but never strain
Could kindle raptures so divine,
So grief assuage, so conquer pain,
And rouse this pensive heart of mine --
As that we hear on Christmas morn,
Upon the wintry breezes borne.
Though Darkness still her empire keep,
And hours must pass, ere morning break;
From troubled dreams, or slumbers deep,
That music kindly bids us wake:
It calls us, with an angel's voice,
To wake, and worship, and rejoice.

Thanks

Dear Choir:

Profound gratitude for all the hard work by everyone on Sunday, and on
the weeks leading up to Sunday. My favorite comment was Jim Voita's:
"Thanks for making us do the Ceremony of Carols."

At tonight's rehearsal we will be working with the music for Christmas
Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. So if you are available to sing
any of those services, I hope you will be able to come tonight, since it
will be our only chance to rehearse this music (we won't have a
rehearsal next Wednesday night[!]).

Thanks again for your good singing and dedication. It is much
appreciated.

Sincerely,
Allan

Sunday morning

Dear Choir:

As you probably noticed when you went out this morning, it's real frosty.  But at least the snow has stopped -- beautiful as it was while coming down -- and we Minnesotans are used to windchill (actually there's still a lot of Iowan in me when it comes to windchill).

Anyway, this is just a reminder about the schedule for Sunday morning:  please try to arrive soon after 8:15, so we can be warmed up (vocally and bodily), start the run-through of the Ceremony of Carols by 8:30, and still have time for looking at the bulletin, announcements, etc., before the carol sing at 9:15.

Busy morning.

See you then.  Thanks for all the great singing.

Sincerely,
                    Allan

Tonight

Dear Choir:

It may be "In Freezing Winter Night" this evening, but I'm sure we will be warmed by having Jann Stein with us on the harp.

The plan is to get through the Ceremony a couple of times, so it may be necessary to go a little beyond 9:00, but I think it will be worth the time to let us hear our parts with the harp.

See you then, and thanks for all the hard work on this beautiful music.

Tonight

Dear Choir:

At this evening's rehearsal, after quickly checking over the music for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, the plan is to spend most of the time on putting the finishing touches on the Ceremony of Carols, before the harpist comes to rehearse with us next week.  I hope to sing through the Ceremony a couple of times, so we may need to go a little overtime -- but we should be finished by 9:15.  It was really helpful last week when we had nearly everyone there, veteran Ceremony singers leading the way for those to whom the music is new. Hope everyone can make it tonight.

Thanks for all the time and effort you put in week after week.  It is much appreciated by all.

Sincerely,
                    Allan

Tomorrow

Dear Choir:

Don't forget that the choir is not singing this Sunday -- the bells are playing.  However, as you may recall the first of our carol sings is tomorrow, starting at 9:15.  It would be great -- and very helpful -- if you are available to come early and help with the singing of the carols, since it's possible that not all congregation members will remember that it's the first Sunday for the carol sings.

Thanks.

    Allan

P.S.  Thanks also for the good rehearsal last Wednesday night.  Not only did we get through all the movements of the Ceremony of Carols, but we also had a chance to run through the music for Christmas Eve.  Next Wednesday night we will plan to do the same, as well as quickly look at the music for the service on Christmas Day.

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Upcoming events, etc.

Dear Choir:

Going through my head all week have been the melodies from last Sunday's anthem; it really went well.  And among the comments have been a couple that were especially appreciated -- about how good the tone quality of the choir was, or, in a word, how good the choir sounded.  So, keep those ear worms coming.

As we continue to prepare for the music coming up in the next several weeks -- music for Christmas and, of course, A Ceremony of Carols -- I hope everyone is staying healthy and can make it to the upcoming rehearsals.  All those who have sung the Ceremony before help lead the way for those who are learning it for the first time, so we should have it in good shape for the dress rehearsal with the harpist coming up soon.

Thanks again for the beautiful singing.  See you tonight.

Sincerely,
                    Allan

Reminder for Wednesday

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that choir rehearsal tomorrow night will begin earlier than usual -- 7:00 p.m.

We'll rehearse for only an hour -- so 7:00 - 8:00, which should enable us to quickly go through Ceremony of Carols as well as practice the music for Sunday.

See you then.

            Allan

P.S.  The anthem last Sunday really went well, I thought:  tempo, phrasing, dynamics, vocal quality -- and joyfully uplifting.  Thanks to all.

No Choir Sunday

Dear Choir:

A reminder that the choir is not singing this Sunday.

Looking ahead -- I am excited about the music coming up in the weeks ahead.  The Ceremony of Carols is not on the immediate schedule, of course (although it's only a month away!), but we need to keep working hard on it, as well.

In that regard, please mark your calendars that we will have a shortened rehearsal on Thanksgiving Eve, November 23rd -- 7:00-8:00 -- to give us a chance to sing through the Ceremony as well as the anthem for the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  Then, we will have just two practices to polish the pieces before the harpist comes to rehearse with us.  So, every rehearsal is important.

Thanks for your voices and your devotion to the cause.  See you Wednesday night (if not before).

Sincerely,
            Allan

Sunday morning -- Daylight Saving time ends

Dear Choir:

The day we've been waiting for ever since last March -- or not, if you
don't like to sleep in -- is this Sunday: Daylight Saving Time ends.
So, unless you don't mind being at the church an hour early, don't
forget to set your clocks back an hour before hitting the sack tonight.

See you tomorrow, bright and later -- at the usual 8:45 a.m. (Is that
sentence a conceptual contradiction?)

Anyway, have a nice sleep.

Allan

No Choir this Sunday

Dear Choir:

A reminder that the bell choir will be providing the special music this
Sunday -- so, no choir.

See you Sunday morning in the congregation and at The Three Sisters
recital that evening at 7:30. And of course, next Wednesday night!

Thanks for the great rehearsals we have had on the "Ceremony of Carols"
and other music the last several weeks.

Sincerely,
Allan

Sunday!

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that it is only the tenors and basses who are singing
this Sunday, so any sopranos and altos remaining in town may have the
day off.

But, since it is only the men who are singing, we obviously need all who
are available.

See you then (8:45 a.m.).

Thanks.

Allan

P.S. Thanks also to all for the great rehearsal Wednesday evening. We
got over a lot of music!

RE: Choir at Glen Robinson's funeral

Dear Choir:

We have been asked to sing at Glen's memorial service, which will take
place Thursday at 11:00 at the church.  I wanted to let you know as soon
as I received the request, hoping it might be possible to arrange your
schedules that day so we will have a good turnout, despite this
necessarily short notice.

We will rehearse the anthem Wednesday evening (tomorrow), and then plan
to meet at about 10:30 or so on Thursday morning, to practice it once more.

I hope it will work out for you to sing; I know Oree and family will
appreciate our being part of the service.

Thanks.

News

Dear Choir:

Perhaps you have received this news already, but if not you will want to
know that our friend and fellow choir member Glen Robinson passed away
this morning.

As noted in the announcement from Cader, plans for the memorial service
have not yet been finalized.

The past few years have been a tough road for Glen, certainly made
easier by Oree's unfailing devotion and bright spirit, and I'm sure our
prayers will join those of many others for comfort for Oree and their
family.

Sunday morning

Dear Choir:

Just a note to urge you to make every effort to be in the choir loft by
8:45 -- maybe even five minutes early! -- for rehearsal tomorrow
morning. We have a lot of music to rehearse: not only the anthem and
introit, but the hymns and other music for which we will be accompanied
by our guest musicians on guitar and hammer dulcimer. I must admit that
I have never sung with hammer dulcimer accompaniment, and I am guessing
that there are even some choir members who may not have done this
before. So we need to be sure we know what we're doing with this music.

Thanks for being flexible and adaptable. See you tomorrow morning --
maybe a few minutes early?!

Allan

P.S. There will be time to put on robes after rehearsal.

Saturday, September 10, 2016

Tomorrow morning

Dear Choir:

Thanks so much for a great rehearsal Wednesday night, especially midst all the chaos of fitting everybody in and rehearsing everything somewhat hurriedly.

Just to remind everyone about the plan for Sunday morning:

We won't wear robes for this Sunday.

Meet at 8:45 in the dining room to warm up, then we will move into the sanctuary and practice the introit first (choir in the two back corners).

After the rehearsal ends at 9:15, please pick out where you will want to sit in the sanctuary during the service.

Just before 9:30, gather in the respective corners to sing the introit:  (sopranos and altos on the soundboard side, tenors and basses on the grand piano side.)

During the organ introduction to the opening hymn (stay in place for the call to worship, please), go to the pew in the sanctuary where you have decided to sit.

The anthem follows immediately after the "Passing of the Peace," so as you finish greeting friends and neighbors, just come to your spot for the singing of the anthem (be sure to bring your folder and music!).

At the end of the anthem, return to your seating place in the sanctuary.

REMEMBER, NO ROBES.

Thanks  to all.
                        Allan

P.S.  All the above sounds simple -- but I'm guessing it will be more complicated to actually pull it off.  So, Keep Smiling!

Rehearsals

Dear Choir:

Just a note to remind everyone that rehearsals resume ("rehearsals
resume" -- it has a certain poetic singable sound, doesn't it) tomorrow
night -- Wednesday -- at 7:30 p.m.

We have some really nice music to sing in the coming weeks, and I look
forward to seeing you tomorrow night.

Thanks for your time, talent, and devotion.

Last Sunday morning

Dear Sopranos and Altos:

Thanks so much for singing Sunday morning. I think I have heard more
comments from congregation members than usual about how nice the group
sounded -- with which I agree! It was great having all the volunteers
join us, also, and the music seemed to fit in very well with the rest of
the service.

Thanks for your central musical part in it, for getting to the church
earlier than usual, and for picking up the music so quickly. It was a
rewarding and meaningful service for me and I hope for you also.

Sincerely,
Allan

More info for Sunday

Dear Sopranos and Altos:

I note that I failed to mention the Sunday morning rehearsal time --
please come to start rehearsing at 8:30; we need the extra time so we
can rehearse both an introit (with bells) and an anthem (with flute).

The music cart will be upstairs; please pick up your folder as you come
in. No robes.

Looking forward to seeing you Sunday morning.

Thanks.

This Sunday -- Sopranos and Altos!

Dear Choir:

Technically, this message is just for the sopranos and altos, but the
tenors and basses are welcome to read it also.

This Sunday is the annual summer pick-up choir day for women and girls,
sopranos and altos. I hope you can come and sing -- we always depend on
the regular choir members to lead the way for any others who join us.

The tenors and basses set a high bar on their Sunday several weeks ago,
and I know the sopranos and altos will want to match that this Sunday.

Hope it will work out for you to be there.

Thanks for all you do.

Allan

Friday, June 24, 2016

Thanks

Dear Choir:

Sincere thanks to all the tenors and basses who were able to join us
last Sunday for the men's anthems. The word I have from congregation
members and spies is that the choir sounded great. So, thanks for
singing. It was much appreciated by all.

Allan

P.S. A reminder to the sopranos and altos that the scheduled date for
the women and girls' choir is July 31st. Hope to see you then.

Correction on Women's Choir date

Dear Choir:

In the email I sent to the choir earlier this evening, I gave an
incorrect date for the women's choir this summer: the date is July
31st, the last Sunday in July.

(Thanks to Linda Orsted for calling this to my attention.)

Allan

Tenors and Basses This Sunday!

Dear Choir:

This message, I guess, is mostly for the tenors and basses, but everyone
is welcome to read it.

Just wanted to call attention to this Sunday, when the "Pick-up Choir"
of tenors and basses, men and boys, is scheduled to sing. Several choir
members are out of town, so I hope all the tenors and basses who are in
town will be available Sunday morning. The plan is to start rehearsal
at 8:30 (a bit earlier than usual, as you will note) so that we will
have time to rehearse an anthem and an introit.

I hope you can come -- and bring someone along with you!

Thanks to everyone.

Allan

P.S. The sopranos and altos are scheduled for Sunday, July 24th. Please
mark your calendar (or cell phone or Ipad or whatever).

Thanks again.

This week's schedule

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that there is no Wednesday-night rehearsal this week,
but we will be singing at the service on Sunday. I know that a number
of people will be out of town, so you are really needed -- usual time,
8:45 a.m.

Last Sunday's anthem was a joy for everybody -- fun to sing and
uplifting to listen to. Thanks to all.

Allan

P.S. Although there's no rehearsal Wednesday night, I know everyone will
want to vocalize for awhile, to make up for the night off. If everyone
starts at exactly 7:30, it should be audible around town.

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Rehearsals, etc.

Dear Choir:

I am hoping that everybody can come to tomorrow night's rehearsal, which
will be our last choir rehearsal before the summer break. We will still
be singing for a couple of Sundays yet in May, so whether or not you
will need to miss one of the Sundays, I still hope you can come. It
will most likely be a shortened rehearsal (!I think I must be getting
soft), since I believe we can get through in a single rehearsal
everything we need to practice for those upcoming worship services.

Also, the piccolo player will be there tomorrow night to rehearse "Come
to the Music" with us -- we just omitted that part when we sang it at
the Presbytery meeting -- and it should be even more fun with the added
instrument. So even if you won't be available for one or more of the
Sunday services, join us anyway for the pleasure of singing the piece.

Finally, I also would like to get some idea of your availability for a
couple of pick-up Sundays this summer.

So, hope to see you then.

Thanks for all you do.

Sincerely,
Allan

No Choir Rehearsal Tonight

Dear Choir:

Wow, "Come to the Music" really went zipping along last night! I think
everybody enjoyed it -- I know I did.

Just to make sure everybody gets the word, here's a reminder that there
will be no choir rehearsal this evening. Sunday is the Bells
Extravaganza, so we won't be singing. But there will be rehearsal next
Wednesday night, for the final Sundays we sing before the summer hiatus.

Thanks again for last night, and for all the nights and days of music
you contribute.

Sincerely,

Allan

Tuesday--Presbytery Meeting

Dear Choir:

Here is a reminder of the schedule for tomorrow and the Presbytery meeting:

The worship service is supposed to start a little after 7:30, so
please be at the church by 7:00 p.m., put on your robe and meet
upstairs in the Children's Choir rehearsal room (at the end of
the hall opposite the nursery), where we will practice
the anthem.

We will be singing only "Come to the Music."

Cader has warned me that the Presbytery meetings do not always
follow the announced schedule, and that things sometimes
run longer than planned, so it is not absolutely certain that
the worship service will start promptly.

Please go with the flow.

Thanks to all.
Allan

No Choir Tomorrow

Dear Choir:

A reminder that the choir is not singing at tomorrow's worship service;
the children's choir will be providing the special music.

Thanks for last week's special special music.

Fwd: But we already knew this, of course

Dear Choir:

Stephanie Frost sent this article to me and, clearly, it is important enough that everyone should read it.  Be sure to watch the video at the end:  I plan to start using these conducting techniques and thought I should give you an advance heads-up.  Plus, the video is an absolute blast!

Allan

P.S. We do plan to do the saliva tests at the end of each rehearsal, so be sure to brush your teeth before coming to the choir loft.

be able to be there.

Thanks, et al.

Dear Choir:

Thanks for all the expenditure of time, talent, and effort over the last
several weeks to prepare the music for Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. I
hope that the services and the music were as rewarding for you as they
were for me.

Just wanted to urge everybody to try to make it to the next couple of
weeks of rehearsal, since we have some challenging pieces coming up,
including very soon the Palestrina piece with the soprano saxophone.
But I hope all the upcoming music will be rewarding, also.

See you then -- and thanks again.

Sincerely,

Allan

Friday night/Sunday

Dear Choir:

The music at last night's service was quite lovely, including ours. (And
the processional was dignified and stately, as if we did this all the time.)

Sincere thanks for your patience and skill.

Allan

P.S. See you Sunday morning at (gasp!) 7:30. I hope we can begin right
on time, since we have quite a bit of music to rehearse. Thanks again.

Address of Ascension Episcopal Church

Dear Choir:

Most of you are probably familiar with the location of Ascension Episcopal Church on Third Street, but for anyone who isn't clear about its location, I offer the following correction to my earlier email about the schedule:

The entrance to the church is actually on Third Street -- 214 Third Street N., to be exact.  (The location I gave previously is the address of the church office, I guess.  Sorry about any confusion.)  The parking ramp referred to is also on Third Street across from the church.

Whatever -- see you tonight at 6:15.

Thanks.

Schedule for this weekend

Dear Choir:

Here is the schedule for the Good Friday service:

6:15 p.m.  - Meet at Ascension Episcopal Church, 215 N. 4th Street.  Parking on street or in ramp across the street from the church.  (Do not park in the library ramp; it is locked at 8:00 p.m.)

Bring your robe, folder, and music for the two pieces we are singing ("Lamb of God" and "Blizzard Anthems").

The service starts at 7:00 and will probably last a bit longer than one hour.

If you are able to offer a ride to any of the pre-service walkers, please do so.

Here is the schedule for Easter Sunday (Don't forget to bring your robe and folder with you!):

7:30 a.m. -- Meet in sanctuary for rehearsal.  (As usual, we will be pressed for time.  No need to put on robes before rehearsal.  There will be time afterwards.)

If possible, please stay through both services, since we will have music to sing throughout the service.
                                            Service times:  8:30 and 11:00

Breakfast is served between the worship services.

Thank you very much for the beautiful singing and for all the time you have put in during this important part of the church year.

    Sincerely,

                        Allan

Friday, March 18, 2016

Upcoming Schedule

Dear Choir:

In case it was difficult to keep all the details of the somewhat confusing schedule for the week leading up to Easter, here is a repeat of the essentials for this Sunday (Palm Sunday):

Meet at the usual time of 8:45, but we will rehearse in the dining room instead of the choir loft.

Folders will be in the cart outside the dining room door.

    NO ROBES.

At some point before the service the bells will join us and we will practice the processional hymn.

Looking ahead to Good Friday:
We will meet at Ascension Episcopal Church at 6:15 p.m..
Bring robes (but no stoles) and music with you.
    Service begins at 7:00 p.m.

Thanks for singing.

                Allan

Daylight Saving Time

Dear Choir:

No doubt everyone is already attuned to setting clocks ahead one hour on
Sunday morning. But perhaps one more reminder won't hurt.

Also, since we have a lot of musical stuff to deal with on Sunday
morning, I hope we can begin rehearsal promptly at 8:45 (one hour ahead,
of course -- [one more reminder]). If you are able to make it just at
the last minute, please come directly to the choir loft; there's always
time to get robes on between the end of rehearsal and the start of the
service.

Also on everyone's calendar, I'm sure, is the Music with a Mission
concert at 4:00 Sunday afternoon. It will be a fabulous program --
great music and great musicians -- with candlelight!

Thanks very much for your devotion and great singing -- with or without
candlelight!

Sincerely,
Allan

Ash Wednesday

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that we will be meeting for rehearsal tomorrow night at
6:30 to rehearse for the Ash Wednesday service. We will be wearing
robes for the service, but there should still be time to put them on
after our short rehearsal (anthem and introit) before the service
starts. Please come directly to the choir loft if your schedule doesn't
work for you to be there early.

After the service we'll rehearse for about an hour.

Many thanks to all.

Allan

Schedule for tomorrow

Dear Choir:

To confirm the schedule for tomorrow morning:

Meet at the usual time of 8:45, but.........
a) Meet in the dining room
b) No robes
c) The music cart will be upstairs as usual

We will get organized in the dining room, then move into the sanctuary
to rehearse with the bells and the children. The anthem sounded very
good when we rehearsed it Wednesday night, and it should be even more
lovely with the addition of the bells and the children.

See you at 8:45, and thanks for all you do.

Fwd: Fwd: Sing with Rene Clausen and the NLC!

Dear Choir:

Here is an interesting and no doubt musically-rewarding opportunity that you might be interested in.  I apologize for sending it on somewhat at the last minute, but our computer was out of operation for several days, then we had problems getting the new one to work.  At any rate, I appreciate Laura's forwarding the info to me, and urge anyone who might want to join this festival day to send in your registration by January 13th (this Wednesday).

Thanks.
