No choir rehearsal tonight
Dear Choir:
Just a reminder that we are not having choir rehearsal this evening --
take the evening off. We will meet at our usual time Sunday morning and
rehearse the anthem then.
See you then -- if you are in town, of course.
Thanks again for all your music-making.

Christmas Eve rehearsal at 8:15
Dear Choir:
With all the different starting and ending times we've had recently, I
thought it might be well to confirm: please plan to be ready to
rehearse in the choir loft at 8:15 p.m. this evening. We will wrap up
by 8:45 so as to be able to hear all the guitarist's prelude music
starting right after we finish rehearsing.
I look forward to seeing you this evening at 8:15. Thanks so much for
all the effort and excellent singing this busy -- and beautiful -- season.
Sincerely,
Allan

Upcoming schedule
Dear Choir:
I found myself wishing that we had another opportunity to sing the
"Songs of Bethlehem," but I guess that's not the case. Fortunately we
have some lovely music coming up for the next several Sundays and for
Christmas Eve -- so I will miss singing the "Songs of Bethlehem" but not
miss the long rehearsals!
Rehearsal tomorrow night at the usual time of 7:00. Thanks again for
all the hard work the past several weeks/months.
Sincerely,
Allan

Re: Thanks for the music
Thank YOU, Allan. It was a really great choice of music. I heard many say afterwards that it was one of the best - familiar, yet beautifully arranged and put together. Accessible and well done. The orchestra was really excellent. Thanks for making it all come together.
Blessed holidays to you and Linda,
Stephanie

Thanks for the music
Dear Choir:
The music today -- in fact, the entire service -- was really special.
There are so many things I could mention that went especially well, but
here are a few of them:
The sopranos: it was so exciting to hear those descants soaring above
the choir each time that one of the pieces ended this way.
The altos singing those wonderful suspensions where everybody but the
altos changes chords, then the altos follow a beat later.
The tenors and basses when they were singing the melody alone, which
came through beautifully.
Bill's solo (I thought his words were every bit as good as the ones in
the score) and the duet with Dave.
The fact that the message of the music and the joy of singing it was
reflected in the tone color, everyone's faces, the dynamics -- even in
getting up together (most of the time).
I could list many more. Each piece just seemed to come alive when you
began singing. So it was very uplifting for me to hear.
Thanks for all the hard work and for bringing it all together today.
Sincerely,
Allan

Observations and comments
Dear Choir:
It is more-or-less a truism that, after a choir has rehearsed a piece
for some weeks, putting it together with orchestral accompaniment
usually causes a bit of a setback, since the choir -- after rehearsing
with the piano or organ all that time -- is now depending on completely
different tone colors for pitches, rhythms, and style. Wednesday's
rehearsal was heartening -- although there were places here and there
that perhaps weren't totally on target, the neat thing was that most of
the time things were going really well. So, we can clear up those
passages on Sunday morning, even though we won't have time to sing
through the entire piece, and it will go beautifully at the service.
Thanks so much for all your hard work and long hours on these pieces; it
is very rewarding to hear the finished product.
A reminder: we will meet at 8:30 Sunday morning. The instruments will
already be rehearsing, but just come on into the choir loft so we can
start the review and make good use of the time before the carol sing and
the beginning of the worship service.
See you then.

Tonight
Dear Choir:
I think you will really enjoy singing with the instruments this evening
-- it's a very nice orchestration.
And, again, in order to get through everything, we will probably need to
go a bit late. Thanks for hanging in there; it will be a rewarding
rehearsal, I believe.

Looking back and Looking ahead
Dear Choir:
Last Wednesday night was a really good rehearsal: we sang through a lot of music, and there were many beautifully-sung passages. It should be even more rewarding to sing the "Music of Bethlehem" with the instruments this coming Wednesday night.
Tomorrow morning meet at the usual time of 8:45. Remembering that we are singing two movements from the aforementioned work, if you haven't yet had the opportunity to paper-clip the pages together, it would be helpful if you could arrive a few minutes early to do that task before rehearsal begins.
And immediately after rehearsal everyone is invited to join in the Christmas carol sing prior to the service.
As always -- and especially at this busy but musical time of the year -- thanks so much for your time and talent and patient perseverance.
Sincerely,
Allan

Wednesday rehearsal
Dear Choir:
I am very much looking forward to tomorrow evening's rehearsal and the
chance to sing through the entire cantata for the 16th; I think it will
be rewarding for everybody to have a chance to sing and to hear how it
all fits together.
Just a reminder that, in order to accomplish the above as well as to
rehearse the music for the 23rd and for Christmas Eve, we will need to
go a little later than usual. To expedite everything please try to be
in the choir loft by 7:00; incidentally, we will go back to our usual
seating arrangement: sopranos and altos on the right side of the choir
loft, tenors and basses on the left side.
Thank you for your patience and hard work. It is much appreciated.

This and That
Dear Choir:
Reminders:
1) the Choir is not singing this Sunday.
2) next Wednesday night's rehearsal is especially important as it
is the last rehearsal before we join the instruments.
Incidentally, in this week's email-Connection from the church, it lists
the late Christmas Eve service as 10:00 p.m. This is an error: as
announced at choir rehearsal and in bulletin and pulpit announcements,
this Christmas Eve service (at which the Choir will sing) is at 9:00 p.m.
Thanks for your consistent patience and musical singing.

Greetings and Salutations
Dear Choir:
Just wanted to say that we are on the home stretch with the music for
the Christmas season; we have a lot of lovely music to sing in the
coming weeks, but I believe it will come together nicely in the days ahead.
Two other bits of information:
1) Please remember that rehearsal will go an extra 15 minutes
tomorrow night. In addition to the special music with the instruments
for December 16th, there are also the anthems for the Sunday right
before Christmas and for Christmas Eve. So we will need to make good use
of each upcoming rehearsal.
2) Please use the different seating formation we used a couple of
times a few weeks ago: sopranos on the right side of the choir loft,
altos on the left side, with the basses and tenors in the middle. I
think this will work best for the music we will be singing in the coming
days.
Sincere thanks for the commitment of your time and and your voices to
make beautiful music together.
See you tomorrow night.

As somebody mentioned after Sunday's service, we peaked on that anthem at just the right time -- when we actually sang it in the worship service! It really went very well and the passages for men alone or women alone were quite fine. Plus, the organ accompaniment was especially lovely. Thanks to all for the hard work.
Here's the schedule for Tuesday (tomorrow) night:
1) Meet at the JX Event Venue, 123 N. Second Street in Stillwater (across the street from the Lowell Inn) at 6:00 p.m. Please arrive a bit early, if possible.
2) There may be some parking available on the street, but I assume the next best bet would be the parking ramp north on Second Street, beyond the Lowell Inn.
3) Bring the anthem piece -- "We Praise You, O God" -- and your folder (you won't need any of the other music in your folder, if you wish to take it out for this occasion).
4) No robes.
5) After the service -- which begins at 7:00 p.m. -- and the pot-luck dessert pie fellowship hour which follows the service, be sure to take your music and folder with you and bring them back to the church Sunday morning.
***Other Information***
There will be no rehearsal Wednesday night (Thanksgiving Eve) of this week.
Meet at the usual time of 8:45 on Sunday morning. Since I have been called to Florida for the weekend, Daryl Timmer will be directing the choir on Sunday. The anthem will be a repeat of Tuesday night's anthem ("We Praise You, O God").
Thanks again for all your time, talent, and commitment.
Sincerely,
Allan

News items
Dear Choir:
Just a reminder that we will not be singing Sunday morning: the bells and the children's choir will be providing the special music.
And a second reminder -- of the concert at St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel, 2115 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, celebrating the 350th anniversary of the birth of the great early-Baroque French composer, François Couperin, during which our own Laura Edman will be playing the organ for part of the featured work. The concert is at 7:30, and besides Laura and other local organists, the Consortium Carissimi choral ensemble will be performing.
Promises to be a very fine concert.
And -- thanks for the good rehearsal last Wednesday evening. The Christmas piece and the forthcoming anthems are coming along well.

Tomorrow
Dear Choir:
Just confirming that we are singing tomorrow. Meet at the usual time of
8:45.
BUT, it will really be an hour later than usual, won't it -- because
Daylight Saving Time ends tonight. So set your clocks back an hour --
but be sure to be in the choir loft by 8:45, since we have several
pieces of music to sing through during rehearsal.
See you then. And thanks.

Jane and Dan's move to Lake
Dear Choir--
You are probably aware that Jane and Dan are moving all of their
belongings from Boutwell's to their lake home. They could use some
help. If you would be available tomorrow (Friday) at 1 p.m. to help
Jane pack up the kitchen, let me know.

Dear Choir:
Thanks for the good rehearsal Wednesday evening. Please meet at the
usual time of 8:45 on Sunday morning.
I apologize for not mentioning the "Sisters in Song" recital coming up
this Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in the sanctuary. Featuring Linda Orsted

better?!

Sunday morning
Dear Choi
Just a note to confirm that we will meet at our usual time of 8:45
tomorrow morning.
But, let's use the seating formation we used at rehearsal Wednesday
evening, with the tenors and basses in the middle and the sopranos and
altos on each side. I realize I indicated that we wouldn't be using
that on Sunday morning, but it worked so well for the anthem we are
singing tomorrow, that we ought to use it again tomorrow morning!
Thanks, as always, for the hard work and good singing. See you tomorrow.

Sunday reminder No. 2
Dear Choir:
Forgot to remind everyone that there is time to put on robes after the
rehearsal and before the service starts. So, unless you arrive early,
please come to the choir loft and wait until after rehearsal to get your
robe. (This approach works for every Sunday, generally, as you will
recall.)
See you at 8:30 tomorrow morning. Thanks to all.

Schedule for this Sunday
Dear Choir:
Thanks for the great choir rehearsal Wednesday night, beginning the new
choir year.
Here's a reminder about the schedule for Sunday:
Please be in the choir loft by 8:30; this earlier time is necessary
because we have quite a few things to go over on this first Sunday back.
See you at 8:30.
Thanks again.

A New Choir Year!
Dear Choir:
Hope you've had a rewarding summer. I'm looking forward to a new and
rewarding choir season, with a lot of good music to sing. The first
rehearsal is tomorrow night -- usual time of 7:00 p.m. I know there are
a few who forgot to vocalize every day, but we can easily overcome that
as we begin anew Wednesday evening.
See you then.
Thanks to all.
Allan
P.S. Speaking of new, the new organ pipes will also be installed next
month, so it will be an especially exciting musical year.

Re: RE: Last Sunday
Dear Choir,
Thanks for volunteering for the picnic next Wednesday, August 15th.
Here's the menu so far:
Fried chicken from Cub--60 pieces (The cost is a dollar a piece, so if you volunteered to donate $, plan on $10,) I have Todd, Mary, Anne, Bill, Curt, and Linda O chipping in.
Salads from Randy (coleslaw) and Anne (bean) Could use one more, any kind.
Watermelon from Jim and Marlene
Bars from Gary and Joan. Could use 2 more pans. I will check with this week's crew to see if they have any left from tonight. They were trying to use up some of the leftovers.
I am planning to pick up the chicken at 5. We need three or four volunteers to be at the church by 5 to get things set up. We also need three or four to volunteer to clean up. I plan to be on clean up.
Thanks again. Let's hope we have great weather. It's so much nicer to be outdoors. As I recall, we had rain last year.
In hope,
Linda R. Orsted

As many of you know, we had a great time last Sunday hosting the singers and instrumentalists of the South African ensemble, 29:11. Their music for the service was inspiring and rewarding to hear, there was a good attendance at the interesting education hour following the service, and the luncheon afterwards was a hit with everybody: the members of the group were friendly, outgoing, and fun to talk with, and the food was especially good, including three kinds of soup (one, my favorite, made by Linda).
So thanks to all the choir members who stayed around to eat and chat with the group, and especially special thanks to all those who provided food, helped with the serving, and did clean-up afterwards: Peter Ulland, for those delicious salads made from his garden; Mary Gillespie, veggies and potato salad (and made the coffee); Laura Edman, cookies; Dianne May and Noel White, brownies; Curt Jackson, watermelon. All the aforementioned helped with the serving, clean-up, and dish-drying, along with Loraine Stoops, but honorable mention goes to Ken May, technically a non-choir member, who took charge of the dishwashing -- ably assisted by Rebecca Erickson.
So, to summarize, it was a really nice day, and the members of 29:11 were profusive in their thanks for our welcoming hospitality; they would like to come again, the next time they are in town.
Thanks to all the choir, for all you do for the church throughout the year -- through music, fellowship, and service to others.

Dear Choir:
Sincerely,
Allan
In hope,
Linda R. Orsted

I'm sorry I had to miss it, although we did watch some of the service on facebook. Just a reminder to the choir: our next mission opportunity is August 15th. We are serving the Wednesday picnic. I am going to check out the cost of getting fried chicken from Cub if you are willing to contribute $ or donate side dishes. Any thoughts pro or con?
