This coming Sunday

Dear Choir:

With all the beautiful music this past week, it may come as a surprise
that there is a service coming up!  But, yes...this Sunday, the 22nd,
there is indeed a worship service for which we will be singing.

Please meet at the usual time:  8:45 a.m.  in the choir loft . There
will be time to put on robes after rehearsal.

See you then, and thanks.

Christmas Eve

Dear Choir:

What a wonderfully uplifting musical presentation it was for me at
yesterday's service -- and I hope it was for you also.  Each of the
pieces we sang had its special effect for me, and it was refreshing to
hear the various styles and historical eras represented by the music.
So, thanks for all the good singing and for the pleasure of making music
and worshiping together.             ..

Now, to remind of upcoming events:

    1) Christmas Eve--meet at 8:15 p.m. (as usual, we will be a bit
pressed for time).

    2) Sunday morning, December 29th -- meet at usual time of 8:45 a.m.

See you at those times -- and thanks again.

Sunday morning -- 8:15!

Dear Choir:

Wanted to be sure that everyone had gotten the word that we will meet at
8:15 a.m. tomorrow morning -- which will give us enough time to sing
through each of the pieces just to make sure everything is in order.  If
you arrive a little earlier it would probably be best to go ahead and
put on your robe, since things may get a bit tight with the start of the
carol sing.  But, if it doesn't work out for you to come before 8:15,
please come directly to the choir loft. Rehearsing the music is more
important than putting on choir robes.

Thanks so much for hanging in there!  I look forward to being part of
the offering of all this lovely music.

See you at 8:15, or before.

Take a listen....

Dear Choir:

It would be really helpful if you had a chance to listen to the You Tube
recordings of our anthems before tonight's rehearsal.  Hope you might
find time to do so.

Thanks.

        Allan

Thanks, with information included

Dear Choir:

Last Sunday's service was a wonderful worship experience, I felt.  Above all, of course, the children's (and Cheryl Klink's) outstanding offering of the Children's Messiah.  But also uplifting was the singing of "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night," about which I -- and Cader -- received an unusually high number of positive comments.  To top if all off, the "Hallelujah" chorus went beautifully, because -- I am convinced -- of you choir members being in the midst of the congregation to lead the way.  The overall effect on a listener -- and certainly on me -- was that a whole group of people were enthusiastically singing and enjoying that great chorus.

So, thanks for your leadership in all these endeavors, which makes our worship services consistently creative, meaningful, and uplifting.

That is to say, thanks again for all you do.

    Sincerely,
            Allan

P.S.  Tomorrow night's very important rehearsal will need to go at least until 8:45, in order for us to rehearse all the upcoming music.  However, because of being able to practice much of it last Sunday morning, and with the addition of the instruments, I have no doubt things will be easier tomorrow night.

See you then -- starting at the regular time of 7:00 p.m.

Important information for Sunday morning

Dear Choir:

(I'm really burning up the wires here -- airwaves? cloud? whatever.)

Last Wednesday night -- at the end of that very tiring, but very productive, rehearsal -- I totally forgot to mention that Cheryl Klink had asked that on Sunday, following the children's singing of their version of the "Hallelujah" chorus, the choir and congregation join in singing Handel's complete version of that great chorus.  Obviously, we choir members will be leading the way on that, and although I realize that most or all of us have sung the "Hallelujah" many times, we probably should at least take 5 minutes or so to pass out the scores, and to run through a bit of it before the service in order to have in mind the tempo and key, et al.

Thus I think we ought to come together this Sunday morning at 8:30 rather than wait until 8:45.  This should also give us time to remind ourselves how "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night" fits together, as well as sing through some of the upcoming music for Wednesday night's rehearsal with the instruments.  And still make it upstairs in time for the carol sing!

Sincere thanks to all for staying so focused on Wednesday night, for picking up the stylistic elements in the Magnificat so quickly, and for your commitment, talent, and good will.  I hope the goal of singing this music as a significant part of our Advent and Christmas worship will make the time and effort meaningful for all -- congregation and choir members alike.

So... See you at 8:30 Sunday morning -- downstairs in the choir room.  Music will be there.  No robes needed.

Fwd: YouTube links for Christmas choir music

Dear Choir:

Linda Orsted has kindly found these recordings on You Tube for all four of the pieces we are singing on Sunday, the 22nd, as well as a fine performance of the Christmas Eve piece, "Fourteen Angels."  She has also added a few descriptive remarks for each.  Please take a listen -- or listens -- to these performances to get a clearer idea of what we are striving for.  If you take your music home and sing along as you listen, that will undoubtedly be even more helpful and rewarding.  Special thanks to Linda for sending these, and to everyone for all your hard work.

Hi Allan,
I know Linda has been encouraging the choir members to go online to practice the Magnificat with recordings. I thought I'd send a few that I can recommend, if you would be so kind as to forward them to the choir members.

Texas All-State Mixed Choir - Topic Magnificat. Very good choir.

BGSU Men's Chorus - Howard Helvey "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" This is a men's chorus, but the performance is excellent. Of course, it includes the page that we are cutting, but it's easy to follow and come in at the right spot.

"Wexford Carol" arranged by Elaine Hagenberg  Listen to what it sounds like with the string quartet.

This is a performance with guitar. Good to hear it before we sing with the guitarist on Christmas Eve

Peace,

Linda R. Orsted

Tonight's rehearsal: Important reminder

Dear Choir:

This is the evening that we have been asked to arrive a bit early --
6:40 ish --in order to help out by being an audience for the children's
short Christmas pageant, starting at 6:45 in the sanctuary.  Please try
to come if you can.

Then, to further complicate the evening a bit, in order to cover all the
upcoming Christmas music, we may need to extend our rehearsal past
8:45.  So please keep smiling, and singing beautifully, from beginning
to end.  It will be worth it when we put it all together, I think.

Sincere thanks for all the time, effort, and commitment you make. It is
much appreciated by me and by the congregation.

Thanks and reminder

Dear Choir:

The Thanks:  Thanks for the great rehearsal last night.  We really were able to sing all the music coming up in the next few weeks for the Christmas season.  Obviously, there are things that still need work, but we made a lot of progress last night.

The Reminder:   The choir is not singing this Sunday, BUT....  Please come early (9:10ish) to support Dave Spencer and the carol sing.

Thanks  for the extra effort in all that you sing and do.

Tomorrow (Wednesday)

Dear Choir:

We're heading  --  as they say  --  down the home stretch.  For the
Christmas music, that is:  meaning the special music Sunday, December
22nd, and of course, Christmas Eve.

With all this beautiful music to rehearse, just wanted to remind
everyone that we will go an extra 15 minutes for the next several
Wednesday nights.  The music is becoming more fun to sing each time we
do so, but we need to pull it all together at each rehearsal.

See you tomorrow night.  And thanks for the very lovely singing of last
Sunday's anthem.  I  think Lenny and Bill Chadwick said it especially well.

Sincerely,

        Allan

Tomorrow

Dear Choir:

Choir meets tomorrow morning at 8:30.  I know everybody will remember,
but a little reminder doesn't hurt.  We have nice music to sing but it
has been more than a week since the last rehearsal, so a little extra
time will be helpful.

See you then.

Beautiful music and reminders

Dear Choir:

When the sopranos and altos began singing the opening of "I Would Be a
Child of Peace" at yesterday's worship service, it was so lovely. Then
the tenors and basses came in continuing similarly and beautifully with
the soft statement of the melody.  The total effect was very uplifting
for me, and totally in keeping with the text, and I think it spoke
meaningfully to the listeners.  Les Morgan, the guest preacher (what a
great sermon!) commented to me afterwards on the beauty of the anthem,
with which I agree.  It was special.

Now for the reminders:
    a) Tomorrow night (Tuesday) is the Thanksgiving service in downtown
Stillwater at the Event Center across from the Lowell Inn. The combined
choirs will rehearse there at 6:00 p.m., with the service scheduled to
begin at 7:00.  A reception with pie will follow.

    b) You don't need to bring anything except yourself (and a pie, if
you wish).  We won't be wearing robes, and music and black folders will
be provided there.

    c) If there are any weather-caused change in plans, I will get that
information out to you as soon as I know anything (about the weather, I
mean).

Thanks again for the beautiful music on Sunday.

Sincerely,

            Allan

P.S. No rehearsal this Wednesday night, but we will meet at 8:30 a.m. on
this coming Sunday, December 1st.

Saturday, November 16, 2019

No choir tomorrow

Dear Choir:

A reminder that the choir is not singing at tomorrow morning's service; the bells will be playing.

Here are a couple of other reminders:
    1) We will go an extra 15 minutes at next Wednesday night's rehearsal -- lots of nice Christmas music to sing, but we need to get through it all.
    2) Please keep in mind the community Thanksgiving service on Tuesday evening, November 26 -- the combined choirs will rehearse at 6:00 for the 7:00 service.  I hope we will have a good representation therein.
    3) We will not have a choir rehearsal on Wednesday, the 27th (Thanksgiving Eve).  People should have a rest before their Thanksgiving Day feasts!

Thanks to all for great singing.

Tomorrow (Sunday)

Dear Choir:

This is a reminder that the choir will not be singing for the service
tomorrow; you will recall that we are hosting the 29:11 South African
group which will provide the music.

Two items in connection with their visit:
        1) There is an all-church soup luncheon following the service
at which 29:11 will be our guests; I hope you can stay for that and
take advantage of the chance to mingle and talk with
these very nice people about their work and lives.

        2)  Several people volunteered at Wednesday night's rehearsal
to help with setup for the luncheon tomorrow:  please come at
9:00 and Lori Gilbertson will be guiding the
preparations and will let us know what needs to be done.

Thanks to everyone for all you do.  See you tomorrow.

Sunday schedule

Dear Choir:

Thanks for the great rehearsal last night -- and for everyone's patience.

I think we are well set for both Sunday morning's service and for the afternoon Anuak concert; it was a pleasure to hear all that music.

And a reminder:  because there are quite a few things to go over Sunday morning, we will meet at 8:30 a.m. for rehearsal.

Looking forward to Sunday.  See you in the choir loft at 8:30.  (Don't forget to turn back your clocks one hour -- Daylight Saving Time is ending!)

Thanks to all.

Upcoming events

Dear Choir:

Just wanted to remind you of two big events coming up in the next couple
of weeks:

    1) this coming Sunday, October 27th -- we will be singing the
"Mighty Fortress" arrangement with the electric guitar.  Everyone has
been wondering how this is going to sound; that question will be
answered at tomorrow evening's rehearsal when Craig Hara will
be there to rehearse it with us.  I think we'll be
surprised to find out what a beautiful unusual setting this is of that
great hymn.

    2) Sunday, November 3rd -- the benefit concert in support of the
Anuak community and their need for purchasing a van to provide
transportation for many of their members.  This concert will be at 5:00
at Trinity Lutheran.  Since our choir will be participating with several
other church choirs, I hope that everyone will be
able to sing with us that afternoon.

Obviously, the Wednesday-night rehearsals are especially important in
preparing for these events, so please make it to as many as possible.

Thanks again for you devotion and for making beautiful music together.

Reminders for today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday)

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that the funeral for George Stoops, Loraine's husband,
is at 5:00 this afternoon (Saturday) at the church.  The past months
have been a tough time for both George and Loraine.

And a second reminder that because of numerous pieces of music to
rehearse, we will meet at 8:30 tomorrow morning (Sunday).  Please be
sure to be in the choir loft by that time -- 8:30 a.m.  Plenty of time
to put on robes afterward.

Thanks to all.

Choir Info: November 3rd Concert

Dear Choir:

As promised, here is more specific information about the concert to help
with fund-raising to purchase a bus for the use of members of the Twin
Cities Anuak church and community (led by our friend Pastor Gilo):

On Sunday afternoon, November 3rd, our choir, as well as the choirs from
Trinity Lutheran, Ascension Episcopal, and the Anuak church, along with
the Valley Chamber Chorale -- and perhaps others -- will present a
concert during which each choir will sing two anthems. The concert will
close with the singing of "Let There Be Peace on Earth" by all the
choirs along with the audience; a dessert reception will follow.  The
concert is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., and will be held at Trinity Lutheran
Church.  There are no tickets required, but a free-will offering will be
received.

I hope everyone will be available that afternoon, since it is a
worthwhile event.  In addition, I must confess that although the concert
is in no way intended to be chorally competitive, there is the small
matter of pride -- we surely would want to be at our best for the occasion!

Although there isn't a final decision yet on what pieces we will be
singing, I have mentioned several possibilities at recent rehearsals,
and we can decide on the specific choices as the day draws nearer.

So please put this event on your calendars -- Sunday, November 3rd, 5:00
p.m.

See you then -- (and on Sunday, of course!).

Thanks to all.

This morning -- Saturday

Dear Choir:

Thanks for helping out at the service for Donna McCullen.  Just to
remind about this morning:  meet in the kids' choir room at 10:30, the
music, folders, and bulletins will be there -- and the chairs are set up
in the same layout as in the choir loft.  And I forgot to mention:  we
won't be wearing robes -- no robes.

See you then -- and/or tomorrow morning.

Thanks again.

Reminder -- Rehearsal for Donna McCullen service

Dear Choir:

Just a reminder that we are rehearsing the two songs with the McCullens'
son, Kevin -- Friday afternoon at the church, 5:30 p.m. If you can make
it then, please come; if you are not available at 5:30 but would like to
sing with the group at the service on Saturday, please be at the church
by 10:30, so we can have a quick run-through.

I know that Ken will greatly appreciate your participation.

See you then.

Dan Roth's service

Dear Choir:

Jane has asked if the choir could sing at Dan's service, which will be
at 3:00 on Thursday afternoon; I told her I was sure that all who were
available at that time would want to be there.  So, let's plan to meet
at 2:30 that afternoon, although if you need to come late, please come
when you can.  We will be singing a familiar anthem, and will be able to
pick it up quickly.  (We can also rehearse it Wednesday night, of course.)

And... thanks for the beautiful singing on Sunday morning; I thought
both pieces went really well.

Sunday morning

Dear Choir:

Wednesday's rehearsal was certainly an enjoyable evening for me -- I
hope it was for you, also.  It was fun singing together with the bells
playing, but just to make sure it all works out right on Sunday morning,
please remember that we are meeting at 8:30 a.m for this Sunday.  There
will be plenty of time to put on robes after rehearsal and before the
service starts, so please be sure to be in the choir loft by 8:30.

Thanks.

Rehearsal Start-Up -- Wednesday

Dear Choir:

Time has flown and here it is time to begin choir rehearsals again: this
Wednesday night (tomorrow, that is!) at our usual time of 7:00 p.m.

I am looking forward to getting back together again, and have a lot of
good music for us to sing this fall -- continuing the great music we
heard this summer from choir soloists and guests.

See you tomorrow night -- 7:00.

Fwd: MN Orchestra outstanding upcoming concert

Dear Choir:

Here is a really good deal from the Minnesota Orchestra:  tickets for only $20 for a fantastic concert coming up next weekend -- Friday and Saturday nights, August 2 and 3, 8:00 p.m. -- of a truly unique work by the Argentinian composer, Osvaldo Golijov:  La Pasión según San Marcos (St. Mark Passion).  Scored for chorus, soloists, dancers, and orchestra -- including a large contingent of Latin American percussion instruments, accordion, and other instruments not normally heard in the orchestra -- the work was commissioned to mark the 250th anniversary of the death of J. S. Bach.  As noted in the program,  "Energized by the spirit of Afro-Cuban music, bossa nova, tango, rumba, and flamenco, Golijov brings the rich tradition of Latin American music to his interpretation of the final days in the life of Jesus Christ as described in the Gospel of Mark."  Twin Cities choral ensembles Border CrosSing and the Minnesota Chorale join the Orchestra and a contingent of guest performers "for a dramatic collaboration of music and theater."

I don't have any free tickets to offer, but $20 is a great price for excellent seats -- available on the main floor as well as some in the balconies.   And this time, you don't have to wait for your tickets to come at the last moment; you can pick out your own seats and get the tickets emailed immediately or held at the box office.  (We bought ours and already have them in hand!  Incidentally, Beth told me that this offer was good only until July 31st.)

    -- Allan

P.S. Yesterday, I attended an engrossing "sing-along" workshop led by Maria Guinand, the outstanding Venezuelan conductor who will be conducting these performances.  The word circulating there among people in the know was "out-of-this-world," "outstanding experience," and "you'll really feel bad if you don't go, then hear other people talking about what a fantastic concert it was."  So, I hope you can go.
